Animal lover to the point of ridicule? There are mice at our vet clinic. I don%26#039;t protest the use of mouse traps that instantly kill the rodent, but I draw the line at traps that kill them slowly. This morning I came to work and found a mouse. It was stuck to a glue trap. Alive. I couldn%26#039;t believe it. They actually make and sell traps that operate soley to stick the animal to them and allow it to struggle, suffer, and starve until it FINALLY dies?

I was disgusted. We work at the clinic to BETTER the lives of animals, but here we are, using the most inhumane trap on mice. I brought up the issue to the boss%26#039; sister. She laughed at me. Then she told the secretary, %26quot;Chuck thinks the glue traps are inhumane!%26quot; She replied %26quot;Chuck! They%26#039;re ONLY mice!%26quot;

I%26#039;m sure they wouldn%26#039;t leave a stray dog stuck to something like that and wait for it to starve to death or die of exhaustion. What%26#039;s the difference? They can both feel pain.

Am I *too much* of an animal lover? Is it really absurd of me to think of the suffering of a mouse?

I don%26#039;t mind killing animals. I%26#039;m the one who has to do it on my farm. Doesn%26#039;t bother me a bit. But I make sure to do it quick.
Just because it%26#039;s a pest, that doesn%26#039;t mean we need to cause it to suffer. 100% 1 Vote

  • Some years ago I used to work at a place that used glue traps for mice. Luckily my boss was pretty squeamish, and all I had to do was describe to her what a mouse might feel if they were caught in a glue trap and left there over, say, a long Thanksgiving weekend. She threw them out the next day, whew.

    Suffering is suffering and I don%26#039;t think it%26#039;s absurd, no, you%26#039;re not %26quot;too sensitive!%26quot; You are a compassionate, feeling person. 0% 0 Votes
  • too much? i don%26#039;t think so. it%26#039;s the same as a human being being trapped in a manhole.

    so, there. being in a vet clinic i think the best option would be to place a pet cat or any other animal that naturally kills or eats mice, instead of these rat poison or traps.

    we should keep the cycle on.

  • Chuck, I applaud you for your compassion. I think it follows that as a vet clinic your employer should care about the suffering of all animals. I would say it is not worth you losing your job over however. I hope you can come a reasonable compromise. Best of luck. 0% 0 Votes
