Can I get an intelligent counterpoint here? Nothing we do can overcome the effects of entropy. We can slow down the effects, but that is it. There certain physical laws in the universe that cannot be broken. Simply put, first you have the main Laws of Thermodynamics - they are;
1) You can%26#039;t win
2) You can%26#039;t even break even
3) You can%26#039;t get out of the game
Then there are the physical paradoxes (Zeno) that appear. The main 3 are;
1) You can%26#039;t catch up
2) You can%26#039;t even start
3) You can%26#039;t even move
We have ignored these basic laws for so long we are doomed. We are already using 20% more energy than the earth and produce. In other words, we %26#039;owe%26#039; energy. That is impossible to do. We are living on borrowed time. Just think, the next time the population doubles, like in the next 15 years, we will be using 40% more energy than the earth can produce. How long do you really think we can sustain that kind of living?

Nobel chemist Frederick Soddy pointed out over 70 years ago: “Debts are subject to the laws of mathematics rather than physics. Unlike wealth, which is subject to the laws of thermodynamics, debts do not rot away with old age and are not consumed in the process of living. On the contrary, they grow at so much per cent per annum, by the well known mathematical laws of simple and compound interest”
Economist Herman Daly explains the inevitable consequences that result when society pits the mathematical notions of compound interest against the physical reality of thermodynamics. He says that while debt can grow at compound interest forever, real physical wealth cannot continue to grow at the same speed “because its physical dimension is subject to the destructive forces of entropy.” He concludes: “Since wealth cannot continually grow as fast as debt, the one to one relation between the two will at so

At every step in the entire production and exchange process, work is done; namely, energy is expended by both humans and machines. Part of that energy is absorbed into the product and part is wasted. This means that the more stages in the economic process, the more energy is lost. The same principle is at work in the production process as in the simple food chain. In highly industrial societies the stages of the economic

process continue to proliferate, meaning more and more energy is dissipated all along the line; and the resultant disorders create even greater long-range problems for society.

You seem to have forgotten that you can %26quot;reduce entropy%26quot;, by lessening the distance electrical power lines have to carry energy. Also with additional technologies such as compact florescent we have reduced the entropy (heat loss) of a regular incandescent bulb by a large amount.
CF the official max carrying capacity for the human population is 9 billion, with an average academical accepted amount of about 8 billion.
Wench just goes to show, that with all the problems we have they have no answers and want no answers.
Hamish that is just a stupid answer, stop trying to pretend your smarter than everyone else.
Asker's Rating:
There is no way you can slow down the effects of entropy now that would make a dent in the damage. Think about it - quit blowing bubbles and get you head out of the clouds. At least you understand what I%26#039;m talking about. We need people like you to wake up the rest of the world. Hamish is on drugs.

  • wow! way too much time on your hands. i have already won. God blessed me with an awesome family, and he sent his son to die on the cross for all our sins. in my eyes i am a winner no matter what you say. have fun and enjoy life. do not be so negative. smile.
  • I stopped reading part way through...

    my main concern is POPULATION growth which you mentioned..

    did you know that several years ago the United Nations warned that the NUMBER 1 threat to our continued existance is HUMAN OVER POPULATION.. that a sustainable figure is about 5 Billion - but we already exceed 6.5 BILLION and growing AND you can see the problems its causing (well not everyone is bright enough to see the problems its causing)

    but anyhow.. nobody is telling people NOT to have so many kids (except China, and I think Vietnam...)

    and WORST is that science is trying to find ways to help people have MORE KIDS!!!!

    and helping people to LIVE LONGER...

    either we need to pick one.. but we cannot have BOTH!
