Can anyone tell me?
Okay, I found an old battery in a draw I was cleaning out. It had an exp. date of 2003! The battery was rusted a tiny bit at the bottom on the metal part, it probably leaked at one point. The question is. How dangerous is it if some of the powder residue came off in the drawer and we touch it on accident? Keep in mind, this was dry residue on the battery itself. I did notice a %26quot;bit%26quot; of tiny particles of the powder in the drawer, touching some other things. I did not throw the other things away, just wiped them off, along with the drawer with a wet wipe. I don%26#039;t even know if I wiped it all down, just think I did. This is nerve wracking to be so freaked out! Thanks for your answers.

If you%26#039;re really worried then go ahead and wash the things the battery might have touched, but I wouldn%26#039;t worry about it. It sounds like there was just a trace amount.

If it was a Ni Cd battery, the stuff is really pretty toxic. You want to wear good rubber gloves and a face mask, not the paper dust masks you see the TV doctors wearing.
The stuff can cause really bad burns and %26quot;heavy metal poisoning%26quot;
even the old carbon core ones could cause burns.

Sounds like dry battery acid.
