Does anyone else feel guilty about throwing food away? What good could I do with food I don%26#039;t want?

Additional Details

I%26#039;m talking about leftovers. Things leftover after a meal that are neatly boxed up to give to a shelter or those less fortunate.

I meant leftovers from a meal that ARE NOT neatly boxed up to send to a shelter. Sorry.

Don%26#039;t Buy it. Keep your money in your pocket and buy less food, cook less food and serve less food. Make careful food selections so that you only buy enough short dated produce that you can actually eat. Keep nutritional store cupboard items like tins of beans in that last a long time and you can use if you run short of fresh produce. If you have family members (such as small children) change the style of meal times to serve yourself from dishes on the table, then encourage the children to only put on their plate a little at a time. Any left over food can then be brought out for the next meal or made into curry etc. If you have any food scraps then feed them to the birds or compost them, never throw them away in your refuse bin.

  • In America? Worrying about extra food? Are you kidding?

Read the first part of %26quot;The Omnivore%26#039;s Dilemma%26quot; by Michael Pollan, and you%26#039;ll see that America makes WAY TOO MUCH food, and it actually hurts our quality of life. Throwing away food in America is like throwing away snow in Alaska.
  • Unless you live next door to a shelter by the time you box it up and drive over there you would have been better off environmentally just donating a few bucks %26quot;in memory%26quot; of the food you tossed.
  • Compost them. Or just don%26#039;t cook as much in the first place. Feed it to a dog? Give some to your neighbors? Lunch for work the next day? You never really need to throw away that much if you think about it.
  • Not really because its not like you could just send your extra food to africa but instead you could buy less food and make sure what you buy u eat so it isnt wasted.
  • well you could try composting it or feeding a pet so long at it is not bad for them like no chocolate to dogs etc..
