• If abattoirs had glass walls, no one would eat meat. For centuries, cultures developed ways to deal with the psychological discontent raised by killing animals for food. Rules were developed, and highly ritualized methods were created for the process of slaughter. The high priests made sure that the person who killed the animal was rotated so that no one would become desensitized to the killing and the gore.
  
  Now, we deal with the issue by shutting the whole process in factories, where no one can see, or does see, the process. The whole system is very closed off, which enables abuses both of the animals and the workers.
