How do land fills effect pollution?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

-Landfills produce methane and carbon dioxide from the fermentation of the material- which are 2 of the main greenhouse gases
- A brown liquid called %26#039;leachate%26#039; that leaches out of the sites can contaminate waterways if not properly disposed of
- Heavy metals from things like batteries can go into the soil
- Chemicals from household products (like cleaning products) can leach into soil/waterways
- Some may say they are %26#039;visual%26#039; pollution as they look unattractive or sound pollution as the machines can be noisy

However, most of these points (except the CO2 and methane being released) can be avoided if the landfill is well managed. 40% 2 Votes

  • *Some* landfills generate methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas.

Other landfills may be sources for blowing debris, or attract birds or animals, which may ingest or disperse toxic or radioactive materials.

Things may leach out of a poorly-designed landfill into groundwater or runoff. 20% 1 Vote
  • Landfills create methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas, as the micro-organisms breakdown and metabolize the waste underground. Some believe that high temperature incineration is better for the environment for this reason. 0% 0 Votes
  • The berried organic material produces methane. Methane causes global warming. 20% 1 Vote
