How old is the Earth? Just wondered another dumb question.?

Best Answer

That depends on what you mean.
The majority of the material that coalesced into our planet formed about 4 and a half billion years ago.
However, The crust didn%26#039;t form until about 4 billion years ago.
The first life appeared around 3.5 billion years ago.
The first life began converting the ocean and atmosphere into the version we know today (nitrogen, oxygen rich) around 2 to 2.5 billion years ago.

Though the planet itself was here 4.5 billion years ago, you really couldn%26#039;t call it the Earth we know today. In fact you wouldn%26#039;t have been able to survive for very long at the surface for at least the first 2 to 3 billion years.
