Initially the physical environment controls what and how the of the biological environment. However some biologic environments are so overwhelming that they have a significant effect on the physical environment.

An example of the first are arid regions of the world. There is not adequate moisture in the physical environment to allow much to grow.

An example of the second is a sub-tropical rain forest. True the abundant moisture allowed the forest to grow. But take away the tees and you just have wet ground and none of diverse species found in a mature forest. Without the mature forest, trees and plants, the abundance of moisture in its self does add to the diverse number of species.
