Is 0.7mm Mech pencil the same as a #2 pencil? I need to know for school i know it%26#039;s a bit random.

2 refers to the hardness of the lead, while 0.7mm is its diameter. Mechanical pencil leads come in a variety of hardnesses. HB is probably close to #2. 50% 3 Votes

  Early versions of the scantron machine would use light to calculate which answer was chosen. The light would reflect off the pencil marks. However, harder pencils such as the #3 would not make the marks heavy enough so that light would reflect off the answer (you had to push harder to get it dark enough). #1 pencils are softer, but a stressful test-taker might not make the marks evenly, causing it to confuse the scantron machine.
  
  Modern scantron machines don%26#039;t have that problem anymore. If you%26#039;re going to take tests, though, I%26#039;d recommend a regular pencil over a mechanical pencil. A worn pencil (don%26#039;t sharpen it prior to the test) will be beneficial, since you will take less passes to completely fill in the bubble.
