Rabbit with extra ears...? We have a new friend in our back yard. It is a rabbit which seams perfectly normal except for an extra set of ears (or something). I first thought it was molting (which I don%26#039;t know if rabbits do). But it has been like this for over a month. I am trying to get a good photo and have attached the best so far.

Any ideas what would cause this?

it is probably a genetic problem

Turns out it is! Our local DNR says its %26quot;Shope papillomavirus%26quot;

  • It looks as if something is stuck to its head. Its unlikely that it has an extra set of ears. I did forward your picture to a vet friend of mine, if you get a better picture please send it as I am curoius.....I have rabbits and have never seen anything like that.
  • Well, assuming you didn%26#039;t just doctor a picture. I would say you are looking at a young (2-3yo) Jackalope with a non-typical rack. or possibly a genetic defect that will soon cost him his life as he will be unable to hear predators approaching.
  • It is very sof;sticated animal and its ears are also very sofsticated and sensitive which hears the voices fastly and from distance.
  • It looks very fake i think it is just an illusion....
