Robin babies - Nest turned over, mama still around? A Robin had made a nest on our bedroom window ledge. We didn%26#039;t mind and have kinda been keeping an eye on it due to it being right outside our window. We haven%26#039;t previously touched it or the babies. This morning I noticed that the nest was on the ground turned over, and the babies were scattered like the had just fallen out as the nest fell. It didn%26#039;t look like any type of animal had messed with them; the nest and babies weren%26#039;t torn up at all. When I first found them I thought all the babies were dead, so I just left it at the time. But, after just checking on it I noticed that some of the babies were still alive. I got a leather glove and put the two that were still alive into the nest and placed the nest back on the window ledge. The two that were no longer alive I put in the garbage. I walked back out maybe ten minutes after doing this and got excited cuz I saw momma was around, but then noticed that one of the babies were back on the ground. ...More coming in additional details...

What could be going on? Is she purposely trying to kill her babies? Should I try putting the one back into the nest? They are too small yet for flying - no feathers. Please help!!

Well after writing the above I went back out their. Momma was sitting on nest with one of the babies still on the ground. The momma started squaken and flew onto the gate almost like she was talking to me. I told her I was going to get the glove and put baby back. She flew back over to the nest. when I came back to get the baby she again flew to the gate and as I bent down she came down about 3 feet away from me watching. I placed the baby back into the nest as she watched.....we will see I guess.

Well, momma is back on nest, so I don%26#039;t know what happened, but she obviouly knew I was helping.

I dont think she was teaching them to fly....they hatched only a week or so ago, they can barely move let alone fly, and their eyes aren%26#039;t open yet. We have concluded that something be it a cat or another bird (some of the birds we have around here are quite mean), something got into the nest. She had 5 eggs and 5 babies at first, when I first discovered the babies on the ground I only found 4 - 2 dead and 2 alive. We cannot find the fifth leading us to believe something somehow got to the nest. We are just going to keep a closer eye on them =)

that first person was probably right. do the babies have their feathers yet or is it still fluffy? if they had their feather the mom was probably trying to teach them to fly, but i doubt she meant to knock over the next completly. good thing you put on the gloves, most people arent so smart ;p
