Also, if the smell of a certain object is taken on by a house after being built, can you get rid of it? Or is it more like the first scent is the one that stays?

That %26#039;new house smell%26#039; is probably the same thing as the %26#039;new car smell%26#039;. Volatile organic chemicals that are evaporating rapidly from the new materials like carpets, paint, etc.There is debate over how harmful they might be... but if you smell it, you are absorbing it into your body.
The only thing you can do is keep the widows open %26amp; a fan blowing in one of the as much as you can.. give them a chance to dissapate into the atmosphere %26amp; away from you.
