Which is more environmentally friendly for home heating? Natural gas or heating oil?

I was kinda wondering about that, and why so many people in the northeast use fuel oil.

• clearly gas.
  because it has a much greater percentage of hydrogen compared to carbon than oil does.
  and adding H2O to the atmosphere does no damage.
