The atmosphere can be combusted provided that there is a high enough temperature for the reaction and a fuel (oil, coal, wood, etc...).At high enough temperatures, the atmosphere can even be combusted to itself through the creation of nitrous oxides (NOx) from N2 and O2 in our atmospheres. This is a problem since when we combust at high temperatures hydrogen and/or carbon, part of the atmospheric gases recombine into NOx. Other recombinations include the creation of ozone which in low levels of our atmosphere is a pollutant.
