• The theory is that the increase in CO2, a byproduct of burning oil and gas, increases the amount of heat absorbed by the Earth and raises the temperature. That part is undeniable. Whether it changes the climate is speculation at this point. To say that it is leading to a catastrophe is beyond speculation and is better described as politicians trying to scare you. CO2 is a greenhouse gas because it lets light in that heats the earth. The heat cannot escape because CO2 blocks heat or infrared light. The most important greenhouse gas is water. 0% 0 Votes
