Why Don%26#039;t They Have Cars That Run On Propane? In Australia nearly all Taxis run on Propane/Butane or LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas). And a lot of passenger cars run it as well.

Ford, GM and others make LPG only models of their popular cars.

You can get just about any car converted to LPG and it cuts your running costs by over 40%. The cars then run on both LPG and Gasoline, you can change it from one to the other with a switch on the dashboard.

I have never seen a car in the U.S. run on it.

Anyone know why?

I have driven vehicles that run on both LPG and Gasoline and it has the regular fuel tank for gasoline. And a cylinder for LPG so you have both, refueling it as simple as with gasoline. There are no restrictions where they are parked and even in accidents you never hear of a problem. LPG is a bi-product of gasoline production and this is a way of using it. In Australia nearly every gas station had LPG the pumps look similar and you refuel it yourself. It takes the same time.

  • LPG and CNG are good temporary steps to reduce emissions. We do have them here, but they are used primarily for fleets like buses and so on. Besides that the supply of Natural Gas is finite, the dispensing method is not as user friendly as gasoline or diesel. To fill your propane tank, you need an airtight connection. The fuel must also be dispensed under pressure. One problem with running you car on both gas and LPG is that the fuels are not compatible. You would have to have 2 different tanks of run the tank dry before you fill it with a different fuel. At least with biodiesel and ethanol, you can mix them with diesel or gas (respectably) and mix without a problem.
