They use a lot less electricity to produce the same amount of light - typicially about one quarter the amount.Electricity production relies heavily on the burning of fossil fuels, primarily coal but some power stations are gas or oil fired. Burning fossil fuels produces greenhouse gases and power generation is the biggest single source of greenhouse gas emissions.
There are other factors as well. The bulbs last much longer therefore less raw materials and energy are needed in production. The extraction of fossil fuels itself produces a lot of greenhouse gases and these are finite resources, once they%26#039;re gone that%26#039;s it. 100% 4 Votes
