You%26#039;re best off finding a conservation non-profit in your area or your state that you believe in and joining it, and actively recruiting friends involved. It takes way too much effort to start your own non-profit when you could very well just be duplicating their effort. Get involved immediately by being a true supporter of an existing land trust, conservancy, or environmental advocacy group. Grassroots effort is what it is going to take to make a change. Join that group and be their star volunteer, and consider being a citizen lobbyist for them. Many organizations have lobby days where you are briefed with important information, then you go to your legislature and talk to your state representative of state senator. Those people have the ability to make a change, and they need to hear you load and clear. Get out and organize clean up days. They aren%26#039;t just clean-up days. They are ways to make a difference in your community, and they allow other people to make a difference. Most importantly they will get you started on forming a network. Talk about your concerns and about issues important to you as you take action. You never know what can come out of something so simple!Other Answers (2)

I am an advisor for 2 watershed groups in Pennsylvania. My advice is to start up a real group, get non-profit status, adopt some bylaws and get out there to start doing projects. Some of the projects my groups do are clean-ups of illegal dumps, water quality improvment (through a variety of projects), and the removal of invasive plant species. Once you have members and you gather for a meeting, you can decide what type of projects you want to start with. In my state, you can apply for grants to do many different types of projects, and even for the start-up of the group. This will require a lot of hard work, but it can be done. Hope this helps.
