For one thing water is a absolute necessesity for all living things.
The amount of water we have on earth has changed very little since earth has cooled off, so many thousands of years ago.
Humanity has been polluting the water to a point where it. is extremely difficult for nature to refresh it. (as in acid rain)
In addition the oceans have been used as dumping grounds for a long time.
A little progress has been made to clean up river and lakes by some concerned people, but not near enough to even begin to make a difference.
