  • 1. You can fill up an old two litre coke bottle and place it inside the cistern of your toilet so that each time you flush it%26#039;s two litres less.
    2. you can have a %26#039;if it%26#039;s yellow let it mellow, if it%26#039;s brown flush it down%26#039; policy in your house.
    3. you can shower to the length of a song you like to shower to, or to an egg timer to keep showers short.
    4. you can think about EMBODIED water ie the water used to make a product and avoid buying water costly products. MOST water used is actually outside the home. eg. to make one glass of beer it takes 15 gallons (70 litres) of water because you have to grow the hops, process it in a factory etc. One hamburger is around 527 gallons (2400 litres). Paper, meat, leather and cotton are very water intensive products. So not wasting food and drink and only buying stuff you need will help save more water than stuff you can do around the home, altho this helps too.
    5. Place a bucket beneath the shower and in the kitchen to collect water you are waiting to warm up or that you%26#039;re using to rinse vegies and use this to water the garden.

Hope there%26#039;s some new stuff there for you. 14% 1 Vote

  • Much domestic water is used in showers and washing dishes. To conserve water without buying anything or building something, just limit your time in the shower, hand wash dishes, and do not allow water to run in your sink when you re not actually using it. Many people will let the water run while they brush their teeth or shave. They will also let it run while they wash dishes. To save water do not let it run when it is not actually being used. Repair all leaking faucets. Water your lawn only when it actually needs it and use soaker hoses for more efficient water delivery to your flower beds. Toilets use a lot of water. I had a friend who lived in California and went to an extreme in saving water that would have been used to flush the toilet. He had his family practice only flushing after a bowel movement or twice a day for urine. He posted a sign in his bathroom saying %26quot;If it%26#039;s yellow, let it mellow. If it%26#039;s brown, flush it down.%26quot;. A bit more extreme than I wish to get but they seemed to live with it okay. 14% 1 Vote
  • eat less beef. You%26#039;ll save more water this way than by drastically reducing the number of showers you take over the span of a year. Raising cattle demand amazing amounts of water. Envir. Bio. 0% 0 Votes
  • make gray water system that will collect the used/soapy water from your washer/dishwasher/sinks/bathtub to be used on your lawn or flower beds (if you use no toxic cleaners you can also use on food crop beds).

Get a low flow shower head with a shut off on it and use that valve while soaping up, shaving, etc.

Take short showers (under 3 minutes) and don%26#039;t shower daily).

A lot of great advice here. 14% 1 Vote
  • Depends on your toilet but if it has a float you can bend it down or adjust it were it using half the water to flush %26amp; fill.
    Shorter showers times.
The rest would be buying stuff like water saver shower heads %26amp; using an energy efficient dishwasher instead of hand washing every single thing. Water saver washer machine.
Conservation cost money or like you said constructing stuff like collecting rain water from the gutter system etc. 0% 0 Votes
  • The easiest way is to install a flow restricter in your shower head. It looks like a plastic washer with a small hole in it and costs maybe 25 cents. Other than that ,you can always shower with a close friend and have good clean fun!
