Trash from Manhattan, and all the metro NYC area, is trucked to landfills in Pennsylvania...and even further west. Some waste also travels west by rail.
Trash is no longer permitted to be dumped at sea, although NYC did that for many, many years.
Trash is just another commodity, like anything else, it is bought, sold, and has value. I%26#039;m an engineer, I know these things.
