Well, considering the price of commodities lately, I think we need more land for planting things that we can eat.... Meaning, cut away before we all can no longer afford to eat!!! :)

Well to save the rainforest the living standards in Africa have to change. If the cutting of the rainforest trees should be prohibited, then the nation has to exploit other natural resources. The people need wood for fuel, and land for farming. What do you propose the first world nations should do - subsidize? We have too much poverty of our own in the West.
