Ben O - the word is MOOT. Mute means something else entirely.

http://www.weatherquestions.com/Roy-Spen... It%26#039;s valid if CO2 is as strong a driver of the climate as the AGW proponents suggest, given that CO2 emissions have increased between the two dates, however cherry-picked they may be. Report Abuse And more importantly, we didn%26#039;t pick 1998 - in 1999 and 2000, your side trumpeted 1998. Then your side predicted that 1998 would soon be surpassed. When it wasn%26#039;t your side started downplaying its importance. Just another flip flop, like with the hurricanes. Report Abuse Does anyone else see that there are serious flaws in this “best” answer? Report Abuse Randall, you%26#039;re wrong as usual. Even if %26#039;our side%26#039; cherrypicked 1998, that doesn%26#039;t make it okay for your side to cherrypick it now (or worse, cherrypick one particular month in 1998).

And contrary to your opinion, CO2 is not the only factor impacting the planet%26#039;s temperatures.

  • If you just look at temperature data for the past 10 years, there has been no warming.

If you include 10 years of data before that and use 10 year moving averages, then it is possible to concude that the 10 year moving average has increased over the last 10 years despite the temperature not increasing.

That would be a mute point as moving averages are a lagging indicator.
