If Svensmark is correct and sunspots, indicative of the Sun%26#039;s magnetic field, remain low, we%26#039;ll be much more vulnerable to that radiation. His theory is that gamma rays interact with water vapor to form clouds which results in cooling, the fewer the sunspots the greater the cloud cover and the more cooling. The last few solar cycles have had higher than normal sunspot activity and we%26#039;ve also seen temps rise.
Could this mean we%26#039;ll be headed for not just a little ice age but such dense cloud cover that the result would be devastating? Our current cycle of sunspots (#24) is almost non-existent. If global warming is proved wrong, this will give you something new to worry about.

Another potential problem is that not only will our solar system be crossing the galactic plane for the first time, but in line with the galactic center. This could have unexpected results on the Sun, including dramatically increased solar activity or a Coronal Mass Ejection.

Jen. It%26#039;s also %26#039;impossible%26#039; for something invisibly small to make you ill, right? Or that%26#039;s what they thought before we learned about germ theory. If we stopped receiving a large amount of solar radiation, how long would it take for glaciers to advance? If the sun went out, how long do you think it would take then? Now guess somewhere between those two extremes.
I think it%26#039;s an interesting confluence of events, their calendar and what we now know will happen on that date. We don%26#039;t know what, if any, impact it will have. But I%26#039;m willing to bet it will be noteworthy.

My point isn%26#039;t that the Mayans predicted anything with their calendar, so I won%26#039;t bother to look up what Nostradamus (is that who you meant, too, nate?) had to say. Anything he wrote has been tampered with and I don%26#039;t think he saw into the future. The point is that the solar system crossing the galactic plane is unusual and it%26#039;s a bit odd that the Mayans managed to nail the date with such primitive instruments Also the mayan calendar is way off because that was the date they died and noone was left to pick up their calendar and write on with the future. no we have more time, it is more threatening to our grand children and children, but it is still a prominent issue to the health of our citizens today, just there is a chance we will not recieve any damage unlike our descendants shall.

I wonder why the Mayan%26#039;s didn%26#039;t predict Nostradamus.Or why Nostradamus didn%26#039;t predict what the Mayan%26#039;s predicted? If that was the case wouldn%26#039;t it be called Mayandamus/Nostramayan prediction? I did find, that there are actually 13 Zodiac signs,(Ophiuchus). Oh well!.. I%26#039;m going to leave out some milk and cookies for the Christmas Bunny.
