Is evironmentalism a religion? Maybe the greenish should read this...

I guess they somehow overlooked these sins during the last 2,000 years of Bible study...does this mean the Pope-mobile is going electric? Are they condemning pharmacists?

Specifically, global warming theory would classify as %26quot;modern mythology%26quot;. It uses supernatural beings (in this case, the collective referred to as %26quot;mankind%26quot;) to explain a natural occurrence beyond our current understanding.
  • I think it can be. I think it is at least a substitute for one. I%26#039;d say many radical environmentalists are also atheist, therefore they have no purpose. All men need purpose, so they must find a cause that makes them feel good about themselves. AGW seems to work very nicely.
  • Define %26quot;religion.%26quot; Crichton seems to define it as %26quot;anything that gives meaning and purpose to your life.%26quot; (He also seems to support the religious idea that without God life can%26#039;t be meaningful-a notion I don%26#039;t hold to) If that%26#039;s the case, environmentalism is a religion, and I%26#039;m one religious dude.

However, if you go the traditional route and define religion as being a belief in a higher power or supreme being that influences human affairs, then no, environmentalism isn%26#039;t a religion, and I%26#039;m not religious.

His comparison between environmentalism and the New Testament is ludicrous. You could do the same thing with pretty much anything. Just think about it, weight loss is a religion. You have priests (Richard Simmons... or some other fitness guru. I don%26#039;t exactly keep up with this religion), sin (overeating and laziness), and redemption (diet and exercise). Do you see now, how inane it is? I doubt it.
  • Sure seems like it. Undying devotion without physical evidence.
  • No, environmentalism is not a religion because there is no worshipping a greater being. Also, anyone that is an environmentalist can be ANY religion! Take for example Christians. That is the largest group and under that are Protestands and Catholics and other sub-groups and so on and so forth. Does it make sense in religious terms? I mean environmentalism would be the largest religious group ever!

I don%26#039;t think it would be anyway because there is no %26quot;church%26quot;, %26quot;bible%26quot;, hierachy ... believing in a common thing doesn%26#039;t mean it%26#039;s a religion. There%26#039;s much more to it! C%26#039;mon, is civil rights and equality a religion?
  • It is a shame, but it seems to have become HQ for some of the most rabid Socialists in the country. It is, I think , more political than religious.
  • that%26#039;s like saying driving a car makes means you willingly caused caused the genocide in dafur. its just a stupid argument.
