  What is responsible for it is tricky. CO2 is the leading candidate because there is evidence to support CO2 as the cause. However, there are plenty of other theory%26#039;s out there that suggest it has to do with solar activity, or the Earths natural orbit. There really isn%26#039;t much evidence to back anything up other than CO2 though.
  
  Don%26#039;t rule out the possibility that it could be a combination of many things and no one fix is going to be the solution. Attacking CO2 emissions is a valiant effort simply because of the side effects. You save money and have cleaner air. Increased gas mileage and fewer coal burning electric plants will simply make the world a better place, it doesn%26#039;t matter if it is getting hotter or not.
  
  To more directly answer your question though, the average temperature has been increasing slowly since record keeping began. There is a report out there that says the temperature of the planet went down almost 1 degree celsius this year, which would wipe out the last 100 years worth of warming, but the validity of that report is in dispute.

  Yes, there are climactic cycles that have taken place through the ages, but this one is significantly sharper than all the others, and it makes sense to deduce that it%26#039;s because of anthropogenic (human caused) activities. Masters degree in Environmental Studies.
