• Photosynthetic, they contain specialised organelles known as chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are composed of highly folded membranes known as thylakoids. In the membrane the pigments such as chlorophyll and beta-carotene absorb light energy of a specific frequency and an electron is excited and lost. This electron passes down carriers which releases energy allowing ATP to be formed. The lost electron from the the chlorophyll molecule is regained from the photolysis of water, this is also produces reduced NADP. This is the light-dependant reaction.
