The first big camping trip we went on I was 7 years old. By camping, I mean everyone strapped on backpacks and took everything they needed, and we hiked out into the middle of the wilderness.

The adults started to teach me foraging on that trip. Just a couple of plants and huckleberries. I was hooked.

From the time I was 13, until I was 19, I virtually lived upon my horses back. If I wasn%26#039;t in school, or in bed asleep, I was out riding. During the summer, we%26#039;d leave at 6AM, and not come home until 9AM. We%26#039;d take a sandwich with us, and forage for everything else out on the trail. We never went hungry. Horses are a great help in boosting one up to reach the highest huckleberries, or the ripest apples.

I wish I could go back and save all of those wild fruit trees we use to harvest meals from...almost all have been bulldozed to make room for McMansions.

Not only could we find a huge number of plants to eat, we also found a huge number of plants we used for medicinal reasons out on the trail. Sunburn, mosquito bites, bee stings, insect repellent, stopping bleeding, ect.

Foraging is great.

HOWEVER, I WANT TO BE TOLD IF SOMEONE IS SERVING ME WILD FORAGED FOOD. Just as I warn other people if I am serving something I foraged. No-one should EVER serve wild foraged food without TELLING THE PERSON THEY ARE SERVING IT TOO! There are some people I would absolutely trust...there are a whole lot more people that are complete flaming idiots.

%26quot;Well the mushroom SMELLED good, so we went ahead and ate it.%26quot;

Or the person I who told me, %26quot;The berries are RED, so they ARE huckleberries.%26quot; I tried to explain to them they were harvesting berries from a HOLLY TREE. ~sigh~

Foraging is great...if done properly. That means not harming the plants you are havesting from too, or at least leaving enough of them to reproduce!

  • As a total lifestyle not necessarily. Foraging takes a lot of knowledge, but most (not all) that do it will only acquire the knowledge of what%26#039;s safe for them to eat without learning what the impact will be on the environment. In a small scale, like while camping, sure go for it. Plus, there%26#039;s a reason mankind%26#039;s mostly moved away from hunting/gathering. Efficiency. Just my $0.02. 25% 1 Vote
  • Used to be common knowledge to forage. I think it would be great if they offered this in grade school and high school.

    Most of my foraging began as a youngster when my parents and grand parents would take us for a Sunday drive to get wild asparagus, mushrooms, berries and the like. I still try to pick wild fruit when I can and learning what is safe to eat makes imminent sense. Learning to survive is an excellent plan. 25% 1 Vote
  • That is actually pretty cool. You could start a blog and let other people in your area know what is edible. I would like it if someone in my area did that. I don%26#039;t have the time to do the research, but I would look for the edible plants in my spare time. What types of things so far have you found in your area that you can eat? How do they taste? 0% 0 Votes
  • hahahaha, I was going to say isn%26#039;t that a felony? Anyway yes that would be a cool thing Ive always wanted to learn that. You never know when you mite be stranded in the woods and need to forage. But stay away from forging things as it is a felony 0% 0 Votes
  • No, because being a forger is a crime. However, you are a forager and that%26#039;s pretty interesting. 0% 0 Votes
