Does it waste more energy if you have your tv on louder?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Depends on whether or not you are listening to it. If you need it louder to hear it, so be it. If you don%26#039;t, then it is a waste of energy because you are using more power to drive the speakers to move more air in the same amount of time. 67% 2 Votes

  • The question is as to energy waste, not necessarily energy draw. Energy draw is that which the TV consumes, to produce a low volume or a higher volume. The Television receives and decodes an audio signal, amplifies the signal, and then converts the signal into sound vibrations that are projected into the air by one or more speakers. The components which affect energy draw when you vary the volume, are (1) energy drawn by the amplifier, (2) energy drawn by the speakers. There ARE ways to design an amplifier and a speaker, where the amount of energy drawn would vary with the volume. But I think the variations would be nominal -- they might be so slight as to be difficult to measure, unless you used extremely sensitive equipment.

However....... energy WASTED is a completely different question. If you are HEATING or COOLING your home, then you might consider the amount of HEAT energy that is transferred into the room, from operating the AMPLIFIER and SPEAKERS. That is -- speakers that vibrate more, probably transfer more heat energy into the room when the volume increases. If you are cooling the same room, then yes, you waste energy by turning the sound louder.

But can you measure the difference?

I leave that exercise for the reader. 0% 0 Votes
  • Yes, the louder the volume, the more electricity required to vibrate the speaker magnets.

Speakers are composed of a magnet attached to paper. Electricity makes the magnet vibrate the paper creating sound waves. To get louder volume, you need the paper to vibrate more violently. This requires more electricity to the magnet. 33% 1 Vote
  • Yes it does! It%26#039;s like running your laptop on battery mode. If you play music on real loud, your battery will run-out faster. 0% 0 Votes
  • You are a moron. does it waste more energy if it is turned off?? Next question: does my stove use more energy when I cook at 3 or at 10? Really? you%26#039;re a dumbass. yes play it loud, i do too 0% 0 Votes
  • Yes. The TV will also use more electricity if you turn up the backlight brightness. 0% 0 Votes
  • No; but if you have it really loud you could cause some ear damage. Adjust the volume judiciously. 0% 0 Votes
  • Yes, but practically nothing. If you%26#039;re worried about the extra energy used, just turn it off a few seconds earlier. 0% 0 Votes
