Help- How is Energy from the Sun Transferred to GPE in a dam? Hi- i recently sat an exam in which a question came up- something like this:

How is energy from the sun transferred to energy in water behind a dam?

So I put that Solar energy is generated via solar cells and small amounts of this electrical energy is used to push water up via kinetic energy into a dam to be stored as GPE.

ON the other hand my friend%26#039;s said something about water being evaporated and then condensing in the reservoir =/

Who%26#039;s correct- and if we%26#039;re both wrong, what%26#039;s the correct answer?

Cheers and thanls in advance

The dam uses the kinetic energy from the water%26#039;s motion.

The source of the river could be runoff from mountaintops, in which case solar energy melts the snow. And yes, as your friend said, the reservoir also collects rainwater, which was previously evaporated due to solar energy. 100% 1 Vote

  • your friend is right, the sun evaporates the water which then rises, condenses into clouds %26amp; falls as rain behind the dam. 0% 0 Votes
