How (environmentally) green is chalkboard use? maybe compared to whiteboards or computer powered SMARTboards

Best Answer

I would say pretty green, all the elements are natural, slate and chalk. I%26#039;ve seen slate chalk boards that are over 100 years old and they are still functional. The only negative is the chalk dust, which can be an irritant.

Whiteboards can be green. Many of the pens used on them have harsh chemicals and can cause lung problems. I don%26#039;t think the materials can be recycled, but if they are taken care of they can last a long time.

Smart boards have the same issues as white boards, plus they do use electricity. Ewaste is a huge problem. They do have some advantages, you can reach a larger audiance, they system my husband has allows people to download things directly to their computers, reduces the need for paper notes, increases the speed and accuracy of communications, can reduce or eleminate the need for people to travel.

So it depends on the application.

  • I dunno,
It%26#039;s recyclable and doesn%26#039;t use electricity...
The chalkdust from the chalk is also recyclable it can be packed to chalk again!
  • well, chalk is made from compressed sea creatures from hundreds of years ago. if that makes any sense at all
so it will take a long time to make more chalk.
