Every locality is different. Since yours is like mine in California, I will answer that way. Each city here is responsible for recycling to reduce solid waste going to the dump. That%26#039;s the purpose of the WM trucks. Place all recyclables in the bin provided and they will pick it up. The sorting is done in a building, which I%26#039;ve seen on TV, where magnets and other devices are used.
For the sake of your family, be sure to rinse whatever will remain in the house until trash day. It does get smelly. I use small plastic wastecans right next to the regular trash to collect things daily. No reason children can%26#039;t learn to flatten cereal boxes and rinse cans and bottles. Here, there is no need to even remove labels.
If you need to train your children and excite them about the money saved by recycling, try a one month project. Separate out the aluminum cans (or go on a can hunt at a local recreation area) and take them to a place that pays for them. Use the money to put gas in the car and go to a local city park. Explain that the money for the parks comes from the city and the city saves money when they recycle for the WM trucks.

That%26#039;s exactly what you should do. Write reminders for them everywhere. And about the drop off. You are supposed to take your recyclables to your local recycling plant. It should be pretty easy to find in the yellow pages.
