I may sound like a complete idiot but...? we recycle plastic, and trashbags are made of plastic, do we recycle trashbags once they have been thrown in the dumpster or reached the landfill??? or do we just overlook those and not recycle

Best Answer

Most plastic bags are not recycled. It is very expensive to recycle plastic bags and often there are no buyers for these bags. In most areas only certain types of plastic are recycled, plastic bags are almost always not one of the types of plastic being recycled. This is why people often recommend using cloth bags instead of getting the plastic ones from the grocery store. Garbage bags are not recycled. In my area if people put their recycling in a plastic bag the recycling company will throw it out. It is a great question.

  • That%26#039;s a good question, I%26#039;ve definately seen stupid questions around here, but I don%26#039;t think this is one of them!

I think most trash bags don%26#039;t get recycled as they wind up in land fills. However, a few places are starting to turn land fills into renewable energy. As the garbage decomposes, it emitts methane, which can be captured and piped to local industries and turned into electricity. So it%26#039;s not all bad.

Even though things like garbage bags usually end up in a land fill, you can try to recycle other things as much as you can. If everyone did this, we wouldn%26#039;t have the environmental problems that we do today and it wouldn%26#039;t be a big deal to throw out garbage bags.
  • You can recycle them if they have not been damage so much, otherwise it%26#039;s totally OK to recycle it.
