Is there a way to use ocean currents as an alternative energy? Without disrupting sea life to an extreme measure?

Several companies are working on using moving ocean water to generate electricity. Finavera Renewables, a Canadian company, makes buoys the occupy 1/2 the space of a wind farm while producing just as much power from ocean waves. Independent Natural Resources, Inc (www.inri.us) makes the SEADOG brand of pumps used in ocean current electricity generation. Oceana Energy Co. is also involved. Ocean Power Technologies is planning (as of Dec 2007) an energy from ocean wave project near Reedsport, Oregon. Verdant Power LLC is also involved in current power.

• Maybe, but the current research is geared toward tidal action. The main problem with oceanic currents is that it would be very disrupting to sea life. The currents provide a more stable temperature, up-well nutrients for shrimp and plankton that other fish feed on, and are also shipping lanes.
  
  And in Oregon, where a group is seeking to build an experimental generator, there is much concern by commercial fishermen over placement in the fishing grounds.
• Yes, people use desalination units to make fresh water and lay charging plates in the ocean to generate electricity.
  The plates work with salt in the water and it is about as clean a system as there ever was.
