Obama announced his running mate last night via spam. Any idea how much energy was consumed with this tactic? I expect there were millions of messages sent, causing LOTS of energy consumption for servers, networks, phones, PC%26#039;s etc. Anyone have any idea how to calculate?

All those servers and other electronics were turned on and using energy, so I don%26#039;t think his announcement suddenly sucked all the electricity from the grid, plus he did it on non peak usage time. Compared to the amount of electricity being used by all the stand by electricity for all the tv%26#039;s, vcr%26#039;s, stereos, ipod docking stations, laptop cords, cel phone chargers that are usually plugged into the wall drawing energy when no one is using them I would say his announcement took dramatically less energy.

And again not spam, you had to make an effort to be notified, so only those who wanted to know were contacted. 67% 2 Votes

  • Servers, networks, mobile phones, PCs and most other electric devices draw %26quot;quiescent%26quot; power even when they are not doing anything. Obviously no one turns off a server or network equipment for a millisecond while they aren%26#039;t moving packets around, nor do people power up their PCs or mobile phones in case there might be interesting news so those and the cellular transmission towers are all drawing quiescent power when idle.

The draw of quiescent power is so high that the difference in power consumption when those devices are active is so low as to be almost impossible to measure. How much extra energy? Not enough to care about. The one exception might be %26quot;plain old telephone service%26quot; where the phone isn%26#039;t powered when on-hook. But, compared to the telephone network - its switches and transmission equipment which is always on - an active telephone uses comparatively no power.

If you don%26#039;t like that answer for political reasons, you can always say that the single announcement was responsible for cutting 10 years off our oil supplies. It isn%26#039;t true, but it may sound good. ;) 20 years of designing network hardware. 33% 1 Vote
  • I don%26#039;t know how much energy it took but it wasn%26#039;t spam, people signed up to be notified. Even all the reporters and pundits were signed up. I was not. 0% 0 Votes
