Here is the dilemma, paper is a re-newable resource. Most of the papers bags current used are made from recycled fiber with a small amount of virgin fiber. This virgin fiber is taken from forests which have been planted for this use, Southern Pines. Plastic bags are easily recycled, but not widely collected. Plastic which is a petroleum product is not a re-newable resource. I use fiber bags, but if I have to pick, I vote for paper, bio-degradable if not recycled and a re-newable resource.

The answer is NEITHER. They%26#039;re roughly equal in pros and cons. While terribly convenient, they both gobble up natural resources and every year billions of bags end up as ugly litter. Eventually they break down into tiny toxic bits polluting soil, rivers, lakes and oceans and cause significant pollution.
Every year 14 million trees are cut to produce the 10 billion paper grocery bags used in America alone.
And while it takes 91% less energy to recycle plastic than paper, only 1-3% of plastic bags are ever recycled.
REUSABLE bags are the answer.

Neither we use the heavy duty bags you buy in the store
.. . ..
Three of them open will fill a standard shopping cart
.. . ..
We are going to Kroger%26#039;s this evening and use our bags and people look at us and have ask
.. .. ..
Where did you get those
.. . ..
So one person going green can have an impact on the whole of things
.. . ..
That one person we saw yesterday maybe got some bags also and someone saw them and ask the same question
.. . .
Or they are going to buy or use the ones they already own
.. . ..
So paper or plastic are out of our shopping cart
.. .. .

Plastic is extremely bad for the enviornment not only when thrown away or burned, but also when made. It takes a lot of oil and fossil fuels to make one plastic bottle. So please use paper. There is only so much of our natural resources and once it%26#039;s gone it will take ove 100,000 years to be replaced.

If it has to be one of the two..... I would use plastic, but only at the stores that will recycle them. Albertsons will recycle the plastic bags, so I return them each time I shop from the previous trip. But for those who only buy a bag or two of groceries they have material reusable bags or totes for those who don%26#039;t want to use up resources.

I think neither. I typically use all clothe bags. Sometimes I run out and have to use a couple paper, which I then reuse for many other things.
IMO Clothe bags are much better. They never rip/tear, and can hold a lot more weight than paper or plastic. At first it seemed like a pain, but turned out to be better for me.
So not only is using clothe bags good for the environment, it is better to carry your groceries around in!

The best thing is to use a reusable cloth bag.
If you can%26#039;t do that, paper. Plastic is good if you%26#039;re going to reuse them for other things.
This is all from an environmental perspective.

paper because it can be used a little longer. The only down fall is what it takes to be made. I recall the cash money was made out of cotton.

Neither resuable cloth bags are the way to go
