What happens to unsorted recycling? When I was growing up, we always had to bring our recycling to the center all cleaned and sorted out, and we put everything in its respective bin, separating green and brown glass, newspapers, magazines, etc...

When I moved for my job, the first time I went to the recycling center with my neatly sorted bags, they just dumped it all into one bin. What happens to this kind of recycling? Does it go to a sorting center, or might my town just be %26quot;pretending%26quot; to recycle? Just seems odd... and inefficient. Anyone else ever heard of this?

Many towns are using single-sort recycling now (sorted by machine); it encourages people to recycle (and eliminates the laziness factor)! Report Abuse

  • Out here the city uses work release inmates at the recycling center to sort the different types of plastic, paper and metals into separate bins.
  • ya, i think that they sort it themselves now. or at least in some places.
  • they usually melt it down. but if it%26#039;s at it%26#039;s 5th time of being through recylcling, it%26#039;s probably recylced out. XD
