Basically, you take a chunk of this radioactive metal and you shoot a neutron at it. The neutron hits it and breaks the radioactive atom in half, which also releases neutrons in the resulting explosion. These new neutrons hit other atoms and you have a chain reaction. the result is a massive release of energy, typically in the form of heat, which a power plant uses to boil water into steam, which turns turbines, creating electricity.
