in a nutshell the law of conservation of energy explains that in an isolated system energy is neither created or destroyed, it is simply undergoes phase changes.
In other words if I kick a ball with 100lbs of force, the energy from my leg is transfered to the ball, but not all of it (maybe 98%), while the rest of the energy is changed into heat because of friction.
Potential energy is a stored energy. For instance if you roll a ball up to the top of a hill, it has potential energy because it is at an elevated height and when pushed it can roll all the way down the hill.
