What is the proper way to dispose of flourescent light bulbs? Flourescent light bulbs contain mercury, so they cannot just be thrown in the trash or recycling bin.

Best Answer

In our community, even residential users are required to take fluorescent bulbs to a hazardous disposal facility - same place you would take your used batteries and electronic equipment. Check with your local waste management district or public works department.

  • i work in a haz. waste facility for a large energy producer. flourescent light bulbs are considered a universal waste. in a private residence, you can wrap them in paper and dispose of in normal trash. (this does not seam right to me but its the law), in a large producer (corporate america) they use a ton of bulbs, therefore they recycle. a company called viola picks up ours.(recycle is the law for corporate). if i were you i would contact my local township officials and ask them what to do. if they say put in the trash ask them why? and explain to them we are all in it for a greener earth. even the smallest of townships will have hundreds of bulbs per week.

keep it green and good luck
  • Hazardous waste disposal facility, just like the long fluorescent tubes that we%26#039;ve been using for decades. :)
  • i would recommend you bring them to the dump! that would be my guess they would have the authority to dispose of them properly
  • I just pitch them in the river or lake.
  • DONT BREAK THEM, THE DUST IS POISONOUS TO LIFE.
