It requires less fuel to transport the produce to market. The amount of fuel used by private cars is not large compared to the amount used by trucks carrying EVERYTHING that you buy at the store, including food grown hundreds or even thousands of miles away. People make such a big fuss about SUVs being wasteful but you never hear a peep about all those big trucks crossing the country all the time.
