I guess I thought using all that water to rinse the cans/bottles was counter-productive to being %26quot;green.%26quot; I very lightly and quickly rinse cans. If a jar is really in need of cleaning (ie mayo, jelly jars), rather than using the water to wash by hand, I just stick them in the dishwasher -- which I am going to run anyway -- and then recycle the clean jars. I run my dishwasher about once a week so this works for me. Just a thought to save money and WATER.

It is not a REQUIREMENT to take off the paper labels. It is more important that you get the cans to a recycling center than into a landfill.
They should ALWAYS be rinsed out.
